Brisbane Shopify Meetup Highlights – October 4th

The final Brisbane #shopifymeetup of 2018 was an exciting night for all in attendance. With a star-studded lineup of speakers including Ashton Tuckerman of Youfoodz, Steve Haase of Shopify and Sebastian Swaczynki of Facebook and an impressive new venue in the Princess Theater, there was an electricity in the air.

As the attendees began to arrive through the doors from as early 5PM, we knew we were in for a special night. Suffice to say, the Brisbane ecommerce community came out in droves with the final attendance count being 301 – a new Shopify Meetup world record! This was a wonderful achievement and just another example of how Brisbane is emerging as an important player in the global digital landscape.

The topic of this month’s topic was ‘Social Media and Brand Building’ and each of the speakers had plenty of fantastic takeaways for the audience. We’d recommend perusing the evening’s slide deck while you read through this wrap-up, to get a greater picture of each speaker’s individual presentation.

As always, Reload’s own Craig Somerville was the host for the evening and kicked things off with ‘Five Marketing Tips in Five Minutes’ – complete with a countdown timer. Each tip gave insight into some next day implementations which Shopify store owners could make to help bolster their marketing efforts.

  1. Map Your Customer Journey
  2. Replicate & Improve on the Instore Experience Online
  3. Create Social Proof
  4. Social Media Remarketing
  5. Setup Real-time Reporting

Next up was Ashton Tuckerman of Youfoodz who shared both her own journey through the world of marketing, as well as how Youfoodz had achieved such significant success over the past five years. As one of the biggest brands to emerge from Brisbane in recent times the audience was excited to learn from one of the best.

Ashton went on to explain that a positive customer experience (CX) is at the heart of every good brand and how Shopify is an important part in how Youfoodz achieves that. The platform’s ability to hone in on customer loyalty and retention compliments their goals of providing measurable value. She spoke on Youfoodz success with influencer marketing and gave insight into how businesses should be setting their Social, Content and Brand focus respectively.

Steve Haase of Shopify followed with an intriguing discussion on what the future holds for ecommerce, with AR and VR on the rise. Customers are now able to see what a product will look like, at scale, in their own living room. Apple iOS12 already gives consumers the opportunity to share these 3D products found on Shopify stores between themselves, meaning that it is just a matter of time before it will take over social media feeds. In fact, people within the audience were already experimenting with AR quick look during Steve’s presentation and live-tweeting their results:

Steve also touched on the power of Shoppable Instagram Stories and how merchants should be taking advantage of the ability to add product stickers to their brand’s Instagram stories. This allows buyers to get more information on a product and even complete a purchase from within the Instagram app, providing an uninterrupted checkout experience.

The final speaker of the evening was Sebastian Swaczynski of Facebook. He covered everything you’d need to know about connecting your Shopify store to Facebook to both sell and advertise your products. Sebastian gave detailed instructions on how to:

  • Implement the Facebook Pixel onto your Shopify Store
  • Create product feeds from your Shopify store to the Facebook marketplace
  • Create dynamic ads that automatically promote your catalogue
  • Utilise Shopping on Instagram
  • Use the Messenger platform for discovery and brand awareness campaigns

And with that, another Shopify Meetup had come and gone! We’d like to thank our sponsors Shoelace, Dotmailer, Okendo and Andzen for help making this memorable night possible. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to everyone who attended a Brisbane Shopify Meetup in 2018 and helped us achieve the world record this month.

We’ll be back in January 2019 with another great panel of speakers. Make sure you join our Meetup.com group to stay tuned for more details on upcoming Meetups and follow @Reload_Media on Twitter for all your digital marketing news, tips and insights.
