The 2022 Trend Australian Retail Businesses Need to Know

With the turbulence and ‘unprecedented times’ of 2020 and 2021, there’s no denying Australian retailers have been put through the wringer over the last few years. Rapidly switching up marketing strategies, product offerings and even business models — Aussie retail businesses are becoming experts at pivoting. Although we’re all in dire need of some more precedent times, early trend predictions indicate that isn’t likely to be the case. Data taken from the UK Government’s Office of National Statistics shows amongst the crazy covid-induced growth rates of 2020 is a different story in 2021; ecommerce is falling.

From UK lockdowns ending, physical stores reopening, “freedom day” in June and then the re-emergence of open borders, the UK has already been through what Australia is only just starting to experience now. This data offers a potential glimpse into the future for what the retail landscape might look like for the first quarter of 2022, based on how each of those events changed consumer behaviour.

Reload also has a London office of its own, where our 22 Reloaders have seen this behaviour play out with our clients in the last quarter of 2020.

“In the UK we saw almost the ‘perfect storm’ for ecom retailers. Freedom day in June occurred with short notice for many businesses, and was announced after many retailers had already done their forecasting for the new financial year that started in April.” said Adam Clarke, General Manager of Reload’s London-based team.

UK GM Adam Clarke says many in ecom faced a “perfect storm” in 2021.

But amongst this, there’ll be plenty of opportunities for well-prepared retailers to prepare for 2022 and capitalise on these industry trends.

We’ve put together a special report addressing what this ‘perfect storm’ may look like for Australian retail businesses and compiled a list of tips and tricks for brand, ecommerce and marketing managers to use when planning for 2022.Download below for detailed insights on what to expect, and expert tips on what Australian retailers can do to best weather the incoming storm.
