There’s a huge range of website platforms out there for online retailers, so this initial decision when launching a new site can be quite daunting. If you’re just starting out, try to go with a free or low cost platform that can scale as your business grows. This could be platforms like Shopify, Magento or BigCommerce.

If you’re a more established business either launching ecommerce for the first time or re-platforming, this is generally a much bigger conversation. Elements like ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), WMS (Warehouse Management System), or POS (Point of Sale) integration become important and are generally customisations beyond what you can get ‘out of the box’. We usually recommend a bigger conversation about your business requirements before choosing a platform and then engaging with a developer or working closely with your in-house team ensure a smooth implementation.

Feel free to chat to one of our ecommerce experts if you’d like to discuss the best solution for your business.

Most ecommerce platforms will supply you with the basics right out of the gate – Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, PayPal, Apple Pay, Android Pay, Google Pay etc. However, there’s no doubt that ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ is a well sought after gateway in retail right now, especially for ecommerce! Selecting the right platform or combination of platforms can be difficult, as there are so many out there (including AfterPay, ZipPay, ZipMoney, OpenPay, FuturePay and so many more).

When looking into the market share of these platforms, AfterPay is definitely domination the market, with over 1,500 retailers and over $300 million in processed revenue through their platform. We’ve outlined some things you should consider when selecting to use a ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ platform and how it could work with your business, not against it:

  • Know your audience: Widely used by the younger generations, the larger market for ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ is teens and people in their early 20s with high disposable income.
  • Know your product: Some products can work extremely well with a post-payment platform, others not so much. The largest market for using post-payment platforms are generally higher value fashion, apparel etc. as these products appeal to the demographic that mainly use these platforms. The cost of your products will also help align which platform is right for you, as some have minimum and maximum lending amounts.
  • Do your research: There are so many post-payment platforms out there which all look very similar on the surface. However, there are key differences between each platform, which represent a huge consideration to your customer, including ease of customer experience, payment terms & time frames, merchant fees, implementation, execution etc.
  • Will it work in-store? Most retailers will implement a ‘Buy Now, Pay Later’ platform into their ecommerce store first, but a great consideration is the increasing usage of these digital platforms in physical retail stores. If you have one or multiple

As simple as this question might sound, there’s a lot more to unpack here. Unfortunately, there’s no “One Size Fits All” approach to digital marketing, especially with an ecommerce store, as every business can differ greatly. Depending on your product, brand positioning, prices, budgets, and marketing capabilities, the ideal way forward will always be something much more tailored.

For most Digitally Native Vertical Brands (DNVBs) the initial focus is generally on three main online marketing channels, including Google Ads, Facebook Ads and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). However, these channels are not suited for every business.

In an ideal world, you should generally avoid putting all of your eggs in one basket by sticking to only one digital marketing channel. When starting your business or beginning your digital transformation, it’s best to implement future proofed foundations into your online store. This can be achieved by following SEO best practice, ensuring your product has a clear and defined set of unique selling points, as well as an ideal customer persona & price guide.

When adding more digital marketing platforms or channels into your marketing strategy, it becomes harder to track the performance of your campaigns. With any kind of digital marketing activities, you should always have a “source of truth” to measure and benchmark the performance of your campaigns at a business level. The most widely used platforms are Google Analytics and Adobe Analytics.

It’s important to understand how the analytics software tracks the performance of your digital campaigns and compares your results across different platforms, such as Facebook Ads, Google Ads and any other channels used. Once you understand this, you’ll be able to see which channels are the most effective at driving sales for your business and where you should be investing more of your marketing budget.
